Figuring Out Food Allergies – Elimination Diet 6-Week Challenge
Description: This 6 week elimination diet challenge is led by Dr. Alice Fong. She is a naturopathic doctor that provides a holistic approach to health and wellbeing. About 80-90% of Dr. Alice’s patients show improvement in their health concerns when they address their food sensitivities by following an elimination diet (and in some instances, even cure their disease altogether). The purpose of the elimination diet is to identify hidden food allergens that may be causing some or all of your symptoms.

During the elimination phase, all common food allergens such as gluten, dairy, eggs, soy and sugar are completely eliminated from your diet for 3 weeks (a comprehensive list will be given during the 1st week of the series, and may be modified based on your symptoms). Then foods are added back in, one at a time, to determine which foods might be causing your symptoms. Symptoms or conditions that can often be improved with an elimination diet include (but not limited to): acne, eczema, itching, hives, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, abdominal pain, acid reflux, nasal congestion, asthma, joint pain, swelling (lips, tongue, face, throat), headache, migraines, brain fog, fatigue, and autoimmune or inflammatory diseases. Other benefits of doing an elimination diet besides figuring out your food allergies/sensitivities include: detoxification, reducing inflammation, repairing and restoring your gut health, weight loss, balance your blood sugar levels, and improving digestion and energy.

Authentic Healing Circle

Purpose: Authentic connection is a vital part of healing for our bodies and minds. In the safe, loving, and accepting space, we can explore the best ways to remove obstacles to healing, alleviate suffering, and deepen our capacity to heal.

Description: Healing circles are safe environments in which those who are impacted by a condition or circumstance can share their experiences and harvest collective wisdom. The work of a healing circle is to allow each one of us to be our most authentic self. Being fully seen, heard and understood in a circle has the potential to heal deep hurts, be it a physical pain or a deep sorrow of the heart. When we are received by others who have the capacity to hold our pain with a loving, non-judgmental acceptance, we can start to believe that we are whole, perfect and complete (like a circle) and the emotional healing can begin. In these small groups, we will share stories, connect, heal, meditate, inspire, empower, nourish our spirits, grow and learn.

MIND-BODY MEDICINE: Self-Care and Stress Management for Healthcare Providers
3.5 CEU approved by the University of Maryland
When: Thursday, May 5th, 2016, 12:30pm – 4:30pm
Location: Calvert County Health Department, 280 Stafford Rd, Barstow, MD 20678
Description: This course is led by Dr. Alice Fong. She is a naturopathic doctor that specializes in stress management and uses a wide variety of tools to help people relax, as well as teach people how they can cope with stress in a healthier way. For many people relaxation can be very difficult, and this seminar takes a holistic approach to wellbeing by addressing stress on a mental, emotional, and physical level. Healthcare providers and clinicians serve the community by caring for people in many different ways. However, it’s not uncommon for those providers to overextend themselves to the point where they are not caring enough about their own wellbeing. Maybe they are not getting enough sleep, eating a nutritious meal, or perhaps they are anxious about work or the status of their patients. When someone is unable to have adequate self-care, it can impact the care received by the people they oversee.

This course reviews the theoretical and clinical application of mind-body techniques with emphasis on integration with biofeedback and holistic health care. Biofeedback is the process of becoming aware of our physiological (aka biological) responses and learning how to regulate these processes (such as breathing and heart rate) through the use of machines or people who offer feedback about those responses. Once we learn to regulate these, we can generalize it to our whole life to where it can impact our mood and autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system involves your sympathetic (fight or flight; stress response) and parasympathetic nervous systems (rest and digest; relaxation). Balancing our autonomic nervous system will allow us to better cope with the many stressors of daily living and ultimately improve our health and immune function. There are various modalities within biofeedback and Dr. Alice will explain, demonstrate, and have students practice exercises to help regulate their stress response in their bodies. Biofeedback has been proven effective for treatment of anxiety, stress, hypertension, insomnia, irritable bowel syndrome, and many other conditions.

Not only will biofeedback be explored and demonstrated but also several mind-body techniques will be introduced (such as breath retraining, progressive muscles relaxation, autogenics, meditation and guided visualization). Students may take advantage of in-class experience with biofeedback monitoring. In addition, nutrition and lifestyle factors will be addressed on how it impacts stress levels.

Dr. Alice will teach you about smart food choices, reading labels, intuitive eating, stress reduction, and exercise strategies to help you build new skills to achieve your goals. Ultimate Stress Management Seminar
Description: The Ultimate Stress Management Seminar is led by Dr.
Stress is a major component of nearly everyone’s life, but it is often disregarded or not handled as well as it could be. Numerous studies have shown that prolonged stress can have a negative impact on person’s physical health and mental and emotional wellbeing. Signs can include, but are not limited to: fatigue, depression, anxiety, pain, overeating/poor dietary choices, decreased immune function, high blood pressure, and insomnia. Perhaps we cannot always change the stressors that come up in our lives, but we CAN change the way we respond to stress. And Dr. Alice’s job is to show you how you can handle your stress better to optimize your health. There IS a different way you can live, let Dr. Alice show you how.

Death Cafe
Description: Death. It’s a subject few of us like to think about, much less discuss. But it is also a reality all of us will have to face someday. Death Cafe was something Dr. Alice Fong participated in while she was living in Seattle and she is excited to bring this type of event to Southern Maryland. At Death Cafes, people drink tea, eat cake, and discuss death (Dr. Alice will provide tea and gluten-free, dairy-free cupcakes). These events happen worldwide. The objective is ‘to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives’. A Death Cafe is a group directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes. People can talk about their own stories, fears, death in the healthcare system, beliefs, etc. It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counseling session.
Since discussing death can be a difficult topic to talk about openly, this is the place to do it in a safe, non-judgmental environment no matter what your beliefs are. People of all faiths, agnostics and atheists are welcome, but we ask that nobody try to push their own beliefs onto others in the group, and to be respectful and considerate of everyone in the room. The sheer nature of the topic tends to create deep meaningful conversations. Here’s an article written by my mentor about Death Cafes.

Man Enough Cafe

Description: The fact of the matter is that boys stop talking about their emotions around age 14 or 15. That’s the same age suicide rates for boys is 5x greater than the rate is for girls. This rejection of emotions is one of the reasons men are more addicted to drugs and alcohol, and commit about 90% of all violent crime. Suicide is the top killer for men under the age of 50.
What is in the foreseeable future if we continue to allow our society to make it impossible for boys and men to express themselves emotionally is more
violence, more suicide, more depression and less connectedness.
The Man Enough Café is an opportunity for both men and women to come
together over coffee to share their thoughts and feelings around masculinity to increase awareness and understanding in order to build community and
connection.
This is a free event open to the general public. We ask you be respectful and
open to hearing different perspectives and opinions.

Introduction to the Landmark Forum

Description: Even though, you might KNOW what to do get healthy and improve your wellbeing, you still don’t DO what you know to do. Let’s explore what those mental road blocks are and create a life of Possibility, Vitality AND Wellness!! This 3-Hour Workshop will give you a better sense of what the 3.5 Day seminar would entail.

Inventing life beyond the limits we know!
– Most of us are operating within the limits of what we know, the decisions we’ve made, the shoulds and shouldn’ts that seem to define our lives.
– We often develop ways of being and acting that become familiar and routine.
– We might take chances, try out new attitudes, but find ourselves doing so within lines already drawn.
– We often allow those fixed notions of how we see things to stand between ourselves and our dreams.

The Landmark Forum explores what’s possible when we begin to create and invite life beyond the limits we’ve set for ourselves – leaving us able to think and act outside the prevailing framework, redefining ourselves, and seeing and acting in whole new ways.
